| The following images are from the History in Action 2000 event staged at Kirby Hall in August which attracted 40000 visitors. The 18th Virginia under the invitation of English Heritage reproduced a section of the Petersburg entrenchments of 1864. The trench system included a single gun emplacement housing a 6 pounder smooth bore field piece, two, 2 man dug out living quarters, lookout point, chevaux-de-frise, fraises and a working wattle and daub fire and chimmney, the trench system was approxamately 50 feet in length and was completly lined with wood pannelling with the living quarters and gun emplacement having wooden boarded flooring, the complete works took a little over 2 days to complete. Members of the Lazyjacks were heavily involved in the preparation, construction and occupation of the trench. Visitors were provided with guided tours and lectures on life in the trenches during the weekend long event. |
