THE AMERICAN EAGLE SOCIETY.

The American Eagle Society is a re-enactment organization dedicated to the accurate portrayal of military units of the American Civil War. Membership is drawn from the following, like-minded, groups:
| Cleburnes Mess | www.cleburnesmess.co.uk |
| The 55th Virginia Infantry Regiment | www.55thva.org |
| The Lazy Jacks Mess | www.lazyjacks.org.uk |
| The Scalawag Mess | http://members.lycos.co.uk/COB9KY/scalawag.htm |
All participants are required to meet high standards with regards to clothing, arms, accoutrements and drill, and to adopt roles that someone of their age, sex and ethnic background might reasonably have been expected to fill in the 1860s.Those portraying soldiers are expected to live as soldiers throughout the course of an event, whether they be in a campaign bivouac, the casemates of a period fort or winter quarters.
The Societys principal activities are living-history camps and drill and musketry displays. We occasionally participate in battle re-enactments as guests of other organizations. The five groups operate as a single military unit with a single command structure. This unit can adopt either a Confederate or a Union impression and is capable of representing troops from both the eastern and western theatres. We are presently working on early, mid and late war impressions.
Newsletters are issued three or four times a year. Frequent articles on Civil War history and all aspects of soldier life, including rations, clothing, equipment, weaponry and drill are published on the web, particularly at www.lazyjacks.org.uk/article.htm
Events calendar: see www.lazyjacks.org.uk/events.htm
The Society is fortunate to have as one of its members Tony MacKenna, the only collodion wet plate photographer in the U.K. The picture at the head of this page is an example of his work. His web site is at www.samackenna.demon.co.uk/samackenna.html
Close contacts are maintained with our friends on the continent, in particular the 5th Virginia Infantry in Germany ( www.hdgm.de/ ), The Motzarteers in France and the 6th Alabama Infantry in the Netherlands
How to join: Anyone with contacts in any of the groups above should join the AES through those organizations. If this is not possible then email our membership secretary, Mr. Graham Beattie, at graham@gbeattie.freeserve.co.uk
